11 Truly Spectacular Spots For Joshua Tree Engagement Photos

Feb 2, 2026

If you ask me, Joshua Tree is one of the best places to plan your engagement pictures. This spot has it all: untamed nature, marvelous rock formations, and sunsets so gorgeous, you would swear they were painted. Spread out over nearly 800,000 acres, this place is so massive, you can easily duck away from the crowds and find completely solitary spaces where you can just be in a world all of your own. The only issue? There are a lot of spots to choose from, and it can feel overwhelming to find the place that is right for you. Lucky for you, you have a guide here to help you out! As a Palm Springs wedding photographer, I got the chance to work with Christian and Kristin to plan engagement sessions at this location. Here are the spots I now always recommend for your Joshua Tree engagement photos!

Maze Loop Trailhead

If you want a place that really gives you the true Joshua Tree experience, the Maze Loop Trailhead is your spot. You can park on the side of the road and instantly be near tall Joshua trees and large rock formations. If you want to really get up close and personal, climb up the stones where you can get truly legendary pics with the golden hour sun.

Cholla Cactus Garden

Cholla Cactus Garden is a unique spot, but you need to come prepared! This is a legitimate cactus garden, and there’s a chance you’ll get poked a time or two if you’re not careful. Trust me, though, the backdrop makes the pain worth it!

Arch Rock

To get the best views of Arch Rock, you will want to bring along some comfy shoes and your sense of adventure. From there, you can climb up to this beautiful, arch-shaped rock (aptly named, right?), and get pics you couldn’t get anywhere else. BTW, this spot is especially downright serene at sunset!

Boy Scout Trail

Boy Scout Trail combines the classic Joshua Tree flora with towering mountains standing off in the distance. The desert haze gives them an ethereal feeling, while the open paths give you an ideal spot to sneak a kiss.

Keys View

Speaking of the mountains, Keys View gives you one of the very best ways to get up and take in the majesty. And while it gives you panoramic views from over 5,000 feet up, it’s actually pretty darn accessible. There is a short .2 mile hike designed to be used by people of all abilities. Get ready for breathtaking views without the breathtaking cardio!

Jumbo Rocks

I’m going to give you one chance to guess what you might find at Jumbo Rocks. Did you get it? With this location, you are going to get massive granite rock formations that have been around for millions of years. You can navigate the rocky path, or you can just stick with the desert surrounding the area and get the formations as your backdrop.

Hidden Valley Picnic Area

The Hidden Valley Picnic Area tends to be one of the most popular picture spots. This gives you tons of diversity for your pics with huge boulders and open fields. As you explore this area, you are going to come across countless hidden spots for one-of-a-kind pics. Oh, and the sunsets here? Unmissable!

Quail Springs Picnic Area

Quail Springs Picnic Area is a spot loved by adventurers. Pretty much any time you come out here, you can find people rock climbing on the giant boulders. Don’t worry, we can work around them! Because this spot is so close to the entrance, it’s the perfect accessible option for people with limited time.

Indian Cove Amphitheater

Indian Cove Amphitheater is a campground in 29 Palms. Yes, there are typically tons of campers out here, but at the same time, this area is so large, it’s easy to find a spot without a single soul around. The rock formations here are some of the best in the park, giving you backdrops that feel so authentically Joshua Tree.

Live Oak Picnic Area

Live Oak Picnic Area is 15 minutes away from Malibu Beach and will give you tons of hiking trails that you can use throughout your session. As you walk along and share a kiss, you are going to have the Santa Monica Mountains prominently on display!

Split Rock

If you need a spot that’s a bit more secluded, Split Rock might be for you. The trail leading to this area is an easy 2-mile loop that will put you amidst some truly jaw-dropping nature. The other reason I love this spot so much? The crowds are much smaller, so you can just focus on taking some gorgeous pics.

Skull Rock

Skull Rock is pretty perfectly named. This legendary spot has a huge rock that looks like a human skull. A little rock’n’roll, a little memento mori, there is a reason why this has become one of the most Instagrammable spots in all of Joshua Tree. The best way to avoid the crowds? Come at daybreak before the crowds have even started on their coffee!

Barker Dam

Barker Dam is frequently called one of the most photogenic places in all of Joshua Tree. This is one of the few places in the area to find water, giving you a tranquil reflection that only amplifies the rocks just behind you. It’s also not uncommon to spot wildlife out here, giving you some pretty adorable photo crashers!

Rattlesnake Canyon

Rattlesnake Canyon is the kind of spot you could only find at Joshua Tree. This area is filled with huge rocks accented by lush flora. It’s also pretty secluded, which will grant you a level of privacy that can be hard to find around here. While the rocky paths might be a little challenging to navigate, this spot is well worth it!

Sheep Pass

Sheep Pass feels like a spot from an entirely different world. The sandy opening gives you a flat spot to stand while surrounded by towering formations. If you do prefer to get a little adventurous, you can head out on the paths and get some pictures on the stones themselves.

Cap Rock

Cap Rock is a pretty iconic backdrop to use throughout your pictures. The namesake rock is nestled in the middle of a ground surrounded by tall Joshua trees. And for such a dreamy backdrop, it’s pretty easy to access. It’s right off of Keys View Road and requires a quick .4 mile hike if you want to get close.
